Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Tuesday morning, Oct. 30, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center.
The special speaker was Samantha Cousins Drost, social studies teacher at CAHS for the past four years. She spoke about the YMCA Youth in Government Program that is starting up again this year. This program is something that Samantha attended 11 years ago while in school herself.
The program provides over 150 students across Maine with the opportunity to play the roles of the Maine House of Representatives and Senate members by debating bills, attending committees and voting on bills. Along with firsthand experience in the workings of government, students develop leadership and independent thinking skills about issues involving Maine citizens.
Other opportunities for student participation include roles such as the governor’s cabinet, lobbyists, newspaper staff and youth governor candidates. Central Aroostook has had 4 youth governors in the past: Tim Tweedie, Jordan Brown, Gabe Smith and Naomi Smith.
This year there will be nine students attending from CAHS. They have been doing fundraisers to help with their funding. Their trip to Augusta will be from Nov. 16-18.
