Washburn Boy Scout bus vandalized
WASHBURN NEWS
by Beth Boddy
During the month of August the batteries and radiator were stolen from the Washburn Boy Scouts’ troop bus while it was parked at their campsite on the Everett Road in Washburn. This has left the Scouts with an unusable bus, the damage too costly to effectively repair.
They are currently looking to purchase a used school bus which will cost at least $2,000 to re-outfit and paint. The Washburn Boy Scouts are a very active troop and need transportation in order for the boys to participate in many of the events that the troop partake in during the year.
Washburn Boy Scout Troop 177 would greatly appreciate any donations that can be made toward refitting this school bus, which will help them continue their quality scouting program. Donations can be made to any member of the Washburn Boy Scouts.
Italy Tour fundraiser
The Washburn Educational Tour Group is selling holiday wreaths, available through the end of November. The wreaths can be purchased decorated for $20 or undecorated for $15. Orders can be placed through any of the Italy Tour students, or you can contact Tracy Reed at treed@msad45.net.
Historical Society
The Salmon Brook Historical Society is raffling off an unsold copy of “An Informal History of Washburn” by Ray Carter, copyright 1984. The book is out of print and has been unavailable for many years. It was generously donated by a member of the Carter family to the Salmon Brook Historical Society for fundraiser purposes. The raffle will be to raise money for a new barn roof. The drawing will take place Dec. 1, making it available to use as a possible Christmas present. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and can be purchased from any Washburn Rotary member. For more information call Rita Kingsbury at 429-9359 or Gary and Louise Cole at 455-4723 or by mail: Salmon Brook Historical Society, PO Box 71, Washburn, ME 04786
Scouts hold supper
On Oct. 3, the Scouts of Troop 177 provided their annual Dutch Oven Supper at Camp Harrison for members of the Washburn Rotary Club. The Rotary Club has sponsored the Scout troop since their beginning in 1965. Each year the troop hosts the club for a variety of main-course items as well as desserts — all cooked in Dutch ovens. The troop is famous for their mouthwatering meals. Willie Drost was also on hand with his homemade rolls to top off the meal. Over 35 folks were in attendance and heard about the events the troop has done during 2012 as well as a Court of Honor held during the evening, with many Scouts earning advancement and merit badges.
Quilters make a difference
The Washburn quilting group Stitchin’ an’ a Givin’ made a total of 100 quilts, 15 pillowcases and two Johnnies for Make a Difference Day; these items were donated to Hospice of Aroostook. They had 18 people there all day working on quilts and several members turned in quilts prior to the event because they were unable to attend.
The group will be making quilts in January for Homeless Services of Aroostook for the new beds that the home will be purchasing. They are also creating a wildlife/scenic quilt for the Washburn Trail Runners Club, who graciously allows them the use of the clubhouse for their quilting group. The Trail Runners Club will be raffling the quilt, which will be hung for viewing sometime this winter.
Again this group meets every Tuesday at 8 a.m. through early afternoon; you can come and go at any time during this time. All levels of quilters or anyone who would like to learn quilting to help this group are welcome to attend.

Hat Day
The Washburn Elementary School held a Hat Day on Friday, Nov. 1, to help raise funds for Stephen Drost. Stephen is the son of Stephen and Amber Drost of Washburn. The 2-year-old was diagnosed with T-cell non-Hodgkins Lymphoblastic Lymphoma.
Stephen will have to undergo about two and a half years of treatment and the family is looking for support to help with the costs of his care, including travel and lodging for his treatments. The students at Washburn Elementary School could donate at least $1 on Friday for Stephen’s cause, and with the donation earned the privilege of wearing a hat in school for the day.
The Drost family would like to thank the students of Washburn Elementary School who raised $540 for Stephen on Friday. Any other donations are greatly appreciated and are being accepted at The County Federal Credit Union in Presque Isle, to the Stephen Drost Cancer Fund. Bottle drive rescheduled
It was posted in a past edition that Lucia Bragg, the sophomore at Washburn High School who is raising money for her People to People Student Ambassador trip, would be having a bottle drive on Nov. 3. Lucia is a member of the Washburn girls’ soccer team, so the bottle drive had to be postponed due to the game on Nov. 3. She apologizes for the sudden change in dates. Lucia will be doing her bottle drive Nov. 10. Lucia needs to raise $300 by Nov. 24, then she will need to make monthly payments of $1,000 until her total of $7,500 has been paid. The bottle drive is being supported by the Washburn Redemption Center. For more information or to give Lucia a donation, call 455-8053.
