UMPI to host First Friday reception

    PRESQUE ISLE — The University of Maine at Presque Isle will host a First Friday Reception for Christopher Lavery’s exhibit, titled “Of Our Elaborate Plans,” on Friday, Nov. 2, from 5-7 p.m. in the Reed Fine Art Gallery.

    Lavery’s exhibit uses a unique blend of his technical experience. Mixing sculpture with video and embedded sound, his show tackles mythological hoax. “Of Our Elaborate Plans” explores everything from Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster to Extraterrestrial Beings.

    The reception is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served. Lavery’s exhibit runs through Nov. 25. The Reed Fine Art Gallery is open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is closed on University holidays. FMI, call Heather Sincavage at 768-9442.

 

American Mathematics Competition planned at UMPI

    PRESQUE ISLE — The University of Maine at Presque Isle will host the American Mathematics Competition on Tuesday, Nov. 13, from noon to 2 p.m. in the Campus Center. This is for students age 8 to 14. Schools may register to participate in the competition and the students of registered schools may participate in their school any time on November 13. If your school is not participating as a school in the competition, you are invited to register and come to UMPI to participate. Registration is required and the event is free of charge. FMI or help registering, call or e-mail Eva Szillery at 356-0207 or evaszillery-mmsets@me.acadia.net.

 

Harlem Rockets to raise money to end hunger

    NorState Federal Credit Union will be hosting some very special guests on Friday, Nov. 9, at the Madawaska High School Gymnasium.

    The Harlem Rockets, a talented group of basketball entertainers who combine incredible ‘show time’ basketball skills and family-friendly comedy will face the NorState FCU Dream Team.

    In this special event to raise money for NorState FCU’s Ending Hunger Campaign and local food pantries, the NFCU Dream Team has graciously agreed to participate.

    Tickets for what promises to be a fun-filled evening are available at NorState FCU in Madawaska, Fort Kent, Van Buren, Eagle Lake, Ashland, Presque Isle or from any NFCU employee. Tickets are also available in St. Agatha at Our Father’s Place General Store.

    Tickets are $6 for children 10 and under and $8 for adults; limited tickets available at the door. Doors open at 6 p.m. The game starts at 7 p.m. For more information about this fun-filled evening, call 800-804-7555. 

 

Workshop to focus on career planning

    PRESQUE ISLE — Women, Work  and Community, in collaboration with the Presque Isle CareerCenter, is offering a five-week workshop series entitled, “Career Planning: Find Your Place in Today’s Job Market.”

    “If you are interested in planning for your future and not just your next job, want to make a career change or are entering or re-entering the workplace, this 15-hour class will help you review skills, interests and experiences, and relate them to career options, identify educational and training opportunities, and develop a step-by-step plan to achieve career goals,” said Suzanne Senechal-Jandreau, regional manager of WWC.

    A follow-up session is scheduled to provide additional networking and support. Classes will be held weekly on Tuesday afternoons from Nov. 6 to Dec. 4 from 1-4 p.m. at the Presque Isle CareerCenter. For more information, or to register, call 764-0050. Pre-registration is required and there is no fee for this series.
