Approximately 124 people from area churches, clubs and organizations gathered recently at the Washburn Snowmobile Club to compile 14,000 bags for the Stop Hunger Now campaign. Stop Hunger Now is an international hunger relief organization with a goal of ending hunger in our lifetime. In less than two hours, the volunteers met and exceeded the goal, packaging 14,040 bags of rice, soy and dehydrated vegetables that would be sent to schools and orphanages in impoverished countries. An additional $241 was also collected to defray the cost of expenses. The effort was spearheaded by the Lidstone United Methodist Church in Washburn and the Mapleton United Methodist Church. This was the first time an event such as this was conducted in northern New England.
