Mars Hill high school
receives Fast Track Grant
MARS HILL NEWS
by Tomi Henderson
Central Aroostook Junior/Senior High School recently received a Fast Track Grant from the Maine Community Foundation for the purchase of a nine-part Emmy-nominated, award-winning video series regarding teen issues. These videos will be the focus of a community-parent-school initiative to foster discussions regarding highly-identifiable social concerns in the local communities.
These videos and discussions have the potential to create positive changes for people through the support of other students, parents, school staff and members of the community.
There will be dates and times set up in January for the video series.

A pumpkin-decorating contest will take place too. Bring in a decorated pumpkin, donate $2 and the winner will split the pot with the BHA.
Tickets will be on sale at the dance for the raffle to help get a pen for Maine State Trooper Canine Officer Gleni, who is stationed in Houlton. First prize is a handmade quilt by Shirley Drew of Oakfield; second prize is a wood carving, “Three Ducks on the Wing,” made by Dee and Phyllis Cote of Littleton; and the third prize is a food basket with items donated by BHA members. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The drawing will take place in December.

Utility District update
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Tuesday morning, Oct. 16, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center.
The special speaker was Rotarian Bob Lento. Bob updated the club on the happenings at the Mars Hill and Blaine Utility District. The improvements undertaken this year with grant money are almost done. There are more projects planned for next year.
The District has purchased the Dearborn camp and property at Young Lake, giving them a total of over 400 acres around Young Lake, the water source for the town. A forester will manage the property and do selective cutting each year. The sale of this wood will more than cover the cost of the property itself.
The district also applied for an education grant and will use the funds to help the local science teachers with equipment for projects and programs.
Future town projects will include a new standpipe. One of the existing standpipes is no longer functional, so the district plans on constructing a new one on the east side of town. This will allow water to be run to Big Rock at some point in the future.
The District is proud of the second-place finish they took in last year’s state competition in the taste category. They plan on competing in more categories in the next competition.
