Fire prevention tips for children
Children ages 5 and under are more than twice as likely to die in a fire as the rest of the population. Often young children are afraid of fire and not sure how to escape safely. Knowing how to safeguard your house against fires and as teaching children what to do if there is a fire can keep everyone safe.
In the bedroom: install smoke alarms on every level of your home and in every sleeping area; and keep furniture and other heavy objects out of the way of doors and windows.
In the kitchen: Lock up matches and lighters out of sight and reach; and never leave a hot stove unattended.
Around the house: Install and test smoke alarms; practice an escape plan with your child; keep all portable heaters out of children’s reach and at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn; and avoid plugging several appliance cords into the same electrical socket.
