Hallett wins PVC girls title, Wildcats qualify for Class B state golf tourney

    LINCOLN — Presque Isle sophomore Jenna Hallett defeated two-time defending state champion Ali Prescott by two strokes to capture the PVC girls golf championship Thursday at JaTo Highlands.

    Hallett shot an 87, compared to Prescott’s 89. They were also two of 10 girls who qualified for the state individual tournament, to be held Oct. 13 at Natanis Golf Club in Vassalboro.

    The Presque Isle Wildcats and Houlton Shiretowners have also qualified for this Saturday’s State Team Golf Championships, to be held at Natanis Golf Club in Vassalboro.

    PI placed second among Class B teams and Houlton was first for Class C at Thursday’s Penobscot Valley Conference championship tournament, helt at JaTo Highlands Golf Course.

    The Wildcats totaled 349 strokes, six more than first-place Mount Desert Island. Also qualifying for the states were Hermon (353) and Foxcroft Academy (373).

    The Shiretowners also came in with 343 strokes and defeated runner-up Deer Isle-Stonington by six strokes. Placing third and also qualifying was George Stevens Academy with a 373.

    Sam Grindle of DI-Stonington was the medalist with a 72. Twenty one boys and 10 girls had scores that qualified them for the state individual championships, to be held Oct. 13, also at Natanis.

    Boys had to shoot 90 or lower to qualify. Making it from Houlton were Cam Clark (80), Cole McLaughlin (86) and Alex Donovan (87). Wildcats moving on were Mike Boone (84), Adam Flynn (85) and Josh Gordon (89).

    Caribou’s Dayne Savage just missed out. He shot a 90, but lost in a tie-breaker.

    Girls were required to shoot a 110 or under. Caribou golfers Katie Pelletier (100) and Lexi Emerson (101) also made the cut and will play in the Oct. 13 event.
