UMPI Owls best Fisher
in homecoming match

    Sophomore Brandon Caverhill of Caribou scored the game’s first two goals as the Owl men’s soccer team went on to blank Fisher College of Boston Saturday, 10-0, in a homecoming game played at Park Family Field.

    Nine other player scored for UMPI. Joel Massa, a sophomore from Millbury, Mass., continued his hot start with his sixth goal of the young season. Matt Vick, a sophomore from Van Buren, had his first career goal.

    Fisher played the game with only seven eligible players.

    The Owls are now 4-2 on the campaign and are ranked 14th in the latest USCAA Coaches’ Poll.

Women’s team splits
matches to move to 2-3

    The University of Maine at Presque Isle women’s soccer team bounced back from a 10-0 loss at UM-Farmington Thursday for a 7-0 triumph over Fisher College of Boston Saturday in a homecoming match.

    Chelsea Lynds-Beaulieu, a sophomore from Presque Isle, led the winning offense by registering a hat trick. The Owls held a 24-1 shot advantage in the contest.

    Lainey Herring, a senior from Houlton, scored her team-leading sixth goal two minutes into the match. Jennifer Ouellette, a junior from Van Buren, had UMPI’s other two goals.

Volleyball team loses 3
at Husson Invitational

    The UMPI volleyball team traveled to Bangor for the Husson Invitational Saturday. The Owls were beaten by the host Eagles, 25-2, 25-23 and 25-11. Randi Kaplan, a sophomore from Embden, had three kills and three assists for the Owls.

    The Owls also lost three sets without a victory against Regis. Leslie Theriault, a sophomore from Enfield, had three kills on eight attempts to pace UMPI.

    In a loss to the Beavers by scores of 25-8, 25-9 and 25-9, Theriault had two kills and Kaplan two assists and two digs to lead the Owls.

Grylka and Legassie
lead UMPI XC squads

    Thomas Grylka ran to a first-place finish in the men’s race and Kayla Legassie was the runner-up in the women’s competition at the UMPI Invitational cross country meet held Saturday in Presque Isle.

    Philip Boody was third and Garrett Hilton fifth as the Owl men outscored Unity, 24-31.

    On the women’s side, Kati Christoffel was third, Nicole Green fourth, Carly Langley fifth and Emily Wright seventh for the Owls, who also topped Unity, 21-34.

Owl golfers compete
in Newry, Orono

    The UM-Presque Isle golf team faced some stiff competition at a pair of tournaments held last week.

    Coming off a pair of invitational victories last week, the team came in sixth at the UM-Farmington Invitational Thursday at Sunday River Golf Club and followed that up by placing fifth at the Husson Invitational played at Penobscot Valley Country Club Saturday.

    USCAA Golfer of the Week Reynold Brown, a sophomore from Essex, Conn., joined teammate Mike Balmer, a senior from New Smyrna Beach, Fla. in carding 85s to lead the Owls. Three other players tied for the top spot with 76s. USM finished first out of eight teams for the tourney team title.

    Husson won its own tourney played on Saturday. Brown shot an 82 and Balmer an 83 to lead UMPI.
