Revelacion Maranatha to perform

PRESQUE ISLE — UMPI’s opening week will include a benefit concert Wednesday, September 5, by Revelacion Maranatha, a Christian instrumental band with vocals from the Dominican Republic.

The 20-member band is made up of individuals varying in ages from 15 to 62 and playing instruments such as Congas Tambora and brass instruments including trumpet and saxophone. They play tropical rhythms called merengue to entertain the whole family.

The band began in LaRomana in the Dominican Republic in 1987 with six members. Moises Sifren, a hospital administrator and a founding member of the group, said, “Our band is growing and introducing new instruments and musical rhythms.”

The band travels through all the Dominican Republic, Haiti and the USA.

Proceeds from this concert will benefit Haitians Helping Haitians, an organization based in the Good Samaritan General Hospital in the Dominican Republic.

They support two schools located near Port-au-Prince, including providing health care, employing teachers and keeping the schools open 10 months annually.

The 7 p.m. concert is sponsored by PrISM and UMPI Student Activities and is free to the public; donations will be accepted to benefit the charitable work of the band. FMI, call Vanessa Pearson at 768-9582.
