AUGUSTA — Gov. Paul LePage announced Monday that Supreme Court Justice Warren M. Silver — along with eight other current judges — is being re-nominated to a new term.
“As governor, I have been impressed with the high quality work of the judicial branch,” said LePage. “My decision to re-nominate nine current judges reflects the fact that Maine people are being served well by our courts.”
Silver was appointed to the court by Gov. John E. Baldacci in 2005. Silver is a graduate of Presque Isle High School and Tufts University. He received his law degree from the Washington College of Law at American University in 1973 and opened his private practice in Bangor in 1977.
In addition to an active trial practice, Silver served on the Board of Governors, was president of the Maine Trial Lawyers Association and chair of the Court’s Civil Rules Committee and the Governor’s Judicial Selection Committee. He was also active in many community activities.
After arriving on the court, Silver was chair of the planning committee for the new Bangor Courthouse. He is also the court liaison to the Board of Bar Examiners, Board of Overseers of the Bar, and the Lawyer’s Fund for Client Protection. In July 2008, he was appointed chair of the Court Finance Committee.
Silver and his wife, Evelyn, reside in Bangor.
Judicial nominees must be reviewed by the Joint Standing Committee on Judiciary and confirmed by the full Senate. The Judiciary Committee is scheduled to hold confirmation hearings on the nominees Sept. 4-5 and the State Senate is scheduled to take up the nominations Sept. 6.
