Consumer fireworks:
They are legal now in Maine, but be careful
IN THE CITY
by Adam Rider
We have been fascinated with Firework Displays for generations. Up until this year, you had to be licensed to shoot fireworks in the State of Maine.
Now, consumer fireworks are legal. With all of the excitement of fireworks also brings the dangers associated with fireworks. Did you know that more fires are reported on that day than on any other day of the year in the United States? Nearly half of these fires are caused by fireworks. The good news is you can enjoy your holiday and fireworks with a few simple safety tips:
• Only use fireworks that are purchased at an authorized fireworks company within the State of Maine. Never purchase fireworks from a company outside of the State of Maine. Each state varies on what is legal and what is not.
• Consumer fireworks may be used between the hours of 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. except on July 4th, December 31st, and the weekends before and after these holidays where the hours are 9 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.
• A person may only use consumer fireworks on that person’s property or on the property of a person who has consented to the use of fireworks on that property.
• A person must be 21 years of age to possess or shoot consumer fireworks.
• Always have water ready if you are shooting fireworks.
• Know your fireworks. Read the caution label before igniting.
• Alcohol and fireworks do not mix.
• Wear safety glasses whenever using fireworks.
• Never relight a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.
• Soak spent fireworks with water before placing them in an outdoor garbage can.
• Avoid using homemade fireworks or illegal explosives: They can kill you! Use only the approved consumer fireworks.
• Fireworks should only be used outdoors.
If you follow these simple safety tips and use good judgement when shooting fireworks you will cut down on injuries and fire damage. Remember to be courteous to your neighbors and exercise considerable caution when using fireworks. Before doing a fireworks display maybe let your neighbors know what you’re going to be doing that evening so they are not startled at 10 p.m. when the first shell goes off.
Stay safe and have a great summer!
