PIHS fall sports tryouts
Presque Isle High School will hold tryouts/practices for some of its fall athletic teams soon.
Fall cheering tryouts are set for Aug. 13 and 14 from 5-6:30 p.m. in the upper gym at Presque Isle High School.
Girls cross country begins Aug. 13 from 4-5:30 p.m. and boys cross country also begins Aug. 13 from 5:30-7 p.m. Those interested should meet in the lower gym at PIHS prior to the start of practice.
Golf tryouts are Aug. 13 and 14 at 3:15 p.m. at Presque Isle Country Club.

3-on-3 hoop tourney slated in Washburn
The Washburn August Festival 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be played Aug. 11 beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Washburn District High School gymnasium.
The under-14 year-old and 14-16 year-old age divisions will require an entry fee of $20 per team. The entry fee for the open division is $48 per player.

Golf tourney will benefit local community college
Officials with TD Bank and the Northern Maine Community College Foundation have announced plans to host their seventh annual golf tournament at the Aroostook Valley Country Club in Fort Fairfield on Thursday, Aug. 9.
Last year’s event was a huge success, with 35 teams competing in the three-person best-ball scramble.
“In addition to the traditional scholarship funds raised through the tournament, for this year only, funds will also be raised to support the new wellness and student centers project on the NMCC campus,” said Michael Kelley, Sr., TD Bank’s regional vice president.
Last year’s tournament raised over $18,000, and this year’s event promises to be even more successful with the addition of several new sponsors.
Soccer season tickets
Season tickets for Presque Isle High School varsity soccer will be available beginning Aug. 6 at the athletics office from 8 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday through Friday. The cost is $30.
They will also be available at the ticket booth at any varsity home game. These passes are good for regular season games only. Call 764-6507 for more information.
Cornerstone golf tourney
Cornerstone Christian Academy’s sixth annual golf tournament will be held Aug. 25 at Caribou Country Club.
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and a shotgun start will be held at 8:30 a.m. The fee for the three-person scramble is $120 per team or $40 for individuals.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three gross and net teams. Longest drive and closest to pin competitions will be held and four hole-in-one prizes will be up for grabs. The top prize will be $15,000 cash.

Hernandez gets three medals at senior track games
James “Chico” Hernandez of Washburn competed in the 26th annual Maine Senior Track and Field Games, held Saturday, July 21 at Scarborough High School.
More than 100 athletes competed and Hernandez took part in six events in the 55-59 age division, medaling in three of them. He took silver in the 50-meter dash, bronze in the 100-meter dash and bronze in the long jump.
He also placed fourth in the javelin, seventh in the shot put and eighth in the discus.
Road race scheduled at UM-Fort Kent
The University of Maine at Fort Kent athletic department will host a five-kilometer summer fun run Saturday, Aug. 4 at the UMFK Sports Center.
The race will begin at 9 a.m., with registration beginning at 8 a.m. The first 100 to register will receive a T-shirt. The fee is $20 and proceeds benefit the Dylan R. Levesque Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Prizes will go to overall champions and female and male winners of the under-18, 18-29, 30-44 and 45-and-over age divisions. For more information, call Eric Werntgen at 834-7828.
