CARIBOU — Emily Jose of Caribou and Randy Hebert of Raleigh, N.C. were able to successfully defend their titles in relatively easy fashion at the Cary Classic Benefit Golf Tournament, held Saturday and Sunday at Caribou Country Club. A field of 76 golfers participated in this year’s event.

CHIPPING ON — Phil Pelletier of Presque Isle takes a shot during his Sunday round in the Cary Classic Benefit Golf Tournament, held at Caribou Country Club. SP-carygolf-dc1-sh-28 Pelletier placed second in the tournament with a score of 156.

Jose managed a 10-stroke win in the ladies division, with Lupita Albert of Fort Kent her closest competitor. Jose, who now has won three of the last four Cary Classic titles, shot a personal-best 36 for her first nine holes Saturday to take control of the tourney early.

“That really took the pressure off,” said the 29-year-old Jose. “I had a good group that I was very relaxed with and I just played very consistent.”

She ended up with an 81 for 18 holes Saturday and followed that up with an 82 on Sunday to ease to the victory.

The 42-year-old Hebert, who graduated from Caribou High School in 1988 and served as CCC’s manager in 1992 and 1993 before relocating to the Carolinas, also had a comfortable win on the men’s side. He collected a six-stroke margin of victory over runner-up Phil Pelletier of Presque Isle, another former Cary tourney champion.

Hebert shot an even-par 72 on Saturday and called the course “perfect.” He said he got into trouble only one time, but was able to save with a bogey.

He ended up with a 78 the following afternoon, although that total also felt like par to him and the others in the field.

“I thought play was very difficult on Sunday with the high winds,” Hebert said. “Myself and maybe one or two others broke 80.”
