NMCC hires Bernard
PRESQUE ISLE — Northern Maine Community College President Timothy Crowley has announced that Sue Bernard has been appointed to the position of director of development and college relations. Bernard, who has served as the communications director for the Diocese of Portland for the past 10 years, will begin her new duties at the college in September.
“Sue is going to be an excellent addition to the NMCC team,” said Crowley. “Her writing strengths and her media relations experience will help the college continue to successfully promote our messages of providing quality, affordable education, while working to help strengthen the economy of the region.”
As spokesperson for the Bishop and the Catholic Church in Maine, Sue Bernard has been responsible for enhancing both internal and external communications and originating all press releases from the Bishop’s office. She also established and oversaw Harvest Magazine, the diocese’s bi-monthly magazine which is distributed to 40,000 households throughout Maine. She advised 60 parishes across the state regarding media relations and promotion of parish events, and also assisted with media relations in Washington, D.C. and New York City during the visit to the United States by Pope Benedict XVI.
Besides her work at the diocese, Bernard spent 20 years as the news director/anchor at WAGM-TV in Presque Isle. She had also worked as a news reporter for WCSH Radio in Portland and WITS Radio in Boston.
“I’m very excited to be returning home and beginning work at the college,” said Bernard. “NMCC is a gem in the Maine Community College System that has proven to be an excellent place where students learn vital skills for today’s work place. I’m looking forward to offering my background and enthusiasm to this highly successful college and to the community at large which is exceptionally supportive of the school.”
In addition to her college relations duties, Bernard will be working closely with the NMCC Foundation to raise funds for student scholarships, program equipment and other needs of the college.
“I am very pleased to welcome Sue Bernard back home to northern Maine. She brings an array of very valuable experience and will be a tremendous asset to both the college and the Foundation board,” said Vicki Smith, NMCC Foundation board chair. “I am confident that her people skills, experience and abilities will only enhance the momentum at the college as we continue with our 50 years of service celebration and move forward with a very exciting project that will transform the college. I certainly look forward to working with Sue.”
