Girl Scouts hold outdoor ceremony
MAPLETON GIRL SCOUT TROOP 1133 recently spent a Saturday morning placing American flags at the headstones of local veterans at the community’s four cemeteries. As a thank you, the town surprised the troop by sending them a check for their hard work. However, after hearing about the financial need to replace aging poles and fraying flags, the troop decided to donate the funds back to the community for officials to make the necessary repairs. The check was returned to Town Treasurer (and Troop Mom) Tammy Getchell at the troop’s final awards ceremony June 14. Pictured are, front: Katelyn Amero. Middle row, from left: Alexis Getchell, Amanda Winslow, Delaney Alward, Sydney Robichaud and Madelyn Buzza. Absent when the photo was taken were troop members Alexus LaFerriere and Rebecca Rider.
Mapleton Girl Scout Troop 1133 marked the end of their fourth year with an outdoor awards ceremony at the gazebo on Main Street Thursday, June 14. Following the welcome from Leader Nancy Winslow, the troop honored Flag Day by opening with a formal flag ceremony. After the introduction of troop members present, the girls presented an “Old Glory” flag recipe that they had learned from former Mapleton Girl Scout Leader, Debbie Sawyer. Following, the girls took part in a brief ceremony, explaining the various parts of the Girl Scout World Trefoil pin, placing each part on a board for the audience to see. The girls concluded the first half of the ceremony by singing “Girl Scout Camp.”
Awards were then presented to each of the girls. Several Brownies earned the Snacks badge, Brownie Girl Scout Way badge, Celebrating Community badge, Brownies Give Back badge and the Brownie Safety Pin award. The Juniors earned the Junior Girl Scout Way badge, Flowers badge, and Savvy Shopper badge. As a troop, many of the girls earned patches for events and activities including touring Cook Florist, roller skating, participating in the Memorial Day parade, and the community service project placing American flags at the local cemeteries. The Brownies all received their second-year membership star and the Juniors all received their first-year membership star, all with a special 100th anniversary disc. All of the troop members and leaders were given a commemorative Girl Scout “100” trefoil pin, marking the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting.
Five of the troop members were awarded a special 100 years cookie patch, sponsored by the Girl Scout Council of Maine. In order to receive the patch, girls had to have sold at least 100 boxes of cookies during the 2011 cookie sale, and in addition, had to sell an additional 10 boxes of cookies beyond their 2011 total for this year’s sale. Receiving those patches were Bethany Baker, Madelyn Buzza, Jenna Mountain, Sydney Robichaud and Amanda Winslow.

MADELYN BUZZA, Mapleton Brownie Girl Scout, took on the challenge of earning the Girl Scouts of Maine Centennial Patch this year. This patch was created in celebration of the 100th year of Girl Scouting. In order to successfully earn the patch, Buzza had to complete 100 acts of community service. She and her family collected 100 school and dental supplies to donate to her church, Grant Memorial United Methodist Church in Presque Isle. The Missions Society at the church sent all of the donations collected by the congregation to children in Nicaragua. Pictured with Buzza are Pastor Ron and Sue Chaffee of the Grant Memorial United Methodist Church. This is Buzza’s fourth year as a member of Mapleton Troop 1133. She is the 9-year-old daughter of Aaron and Jennifer Buzza.
Madelyn Buzza earned the “Centennial Patch: 100 Deeds Well Done” by collecting 100 school supplies and dental supplies for her church, Grant Memorial United Methodist Church. The Missions Society sent all supplies collected to their church conference, which, in turn, sent them to needy children in Nicaragua. Debbie and Jenna Mountain were also recognized for earning the Family Star patch. Debbie received a certificate and Jenna received a silver star patch for her uniform.
Before bridging to Juniors, each of the Brownies had an opportunity to share their thoughts about the past two years spent as a Brownie Girl Scout. Some of the girls composed their own poems or stories and shared them with the audience. Then, each of the girls presented a parent with a flower as a token of appreciation for their support during their years as a Brownie.
One by one, the seven Brownies present walked across the outdoor bridge to greet Junior Katelyn Amero and receive their Junior pin from Laurie Amero. After Mrs. Amero read a poem, “My Scout Pin,” the girls concluded with singing, “Make New Friends.” Each of the newly bridged Juniors received a bag from the leaders with a Bridging Certificate, new Junior vest and all of the Junior uniform pieces. All of the troop members and leaders also received new troop uniform shirts.
Jennifer Buzza concluded the ceremony with a couple of special presentations. Shortly after the troop placed the American flags at all of the local cemeteries, the troop received a surprise check in the mail from the town. After the leaders discussed how to spend the funds received, it was decided to donate the check back to the town, with the stipulation that the money be spent on necessary repairs and upgrades desperately needed at the cemeteries. Town Treasurer (and Troop Mom) Tammy Getchell was present to receive the check and express her surprise and gratitude to the girls and leaders for the generous gesture.
The troop also recognized Jenna Mountain and her parents, Debbie and Dennis Mountain. They will be moving to Virginia this summer, so Jenna was presented with a framed photo collage of her years in Troop 1133, signed by all the girls and leaders. Her parents were presented with a gas card to assist with the long drive to Virginia.
The ceremony concluded with the girls and their families enjoying brownie a la modes!
Troop 1133 members include Brownies Delaney Alward, Bethany Baker, Madelyn Buzza, Alexis Getchell, Alexus LaFerriere, Jenna Mountain, Sydney Robichaud, Amanda Winslow and Juniors Katelyn Amero and Rebecca Rider. The troop is led by Jennifer Buzza, Nancy Winslow and Laurie Amero.
