There will be a meeting of the Mill Pond Park Committee on Wednesday, June 20, at 6:30 p.m. at the Civic Center. The committee has received permission from the Washburn Planning Board to install a playground at the park.
The committee would like to have anyone interested in helping with the planning of this to attend the meeting with their input.

Pictured are Stu Turner, Mike Waugh and Sean Diette. Mike and Sean are the coaches of WDHS cross country and track teams and were welcomed at the June 13 meeting of the Washburn Rotary Club. They were there to advise club members of their fund-raising efforts to provide warm-ups for their teams, who currently have none. These teams are growing and have had many successes in their competitions. The Washburn Rotary Club heartily endorses this effort. |
Truck pull
On Saturday, July 7, the Rotary Club of Washburn will be hosting a truck pull at the Northern Maine Fairgrounds in Presque Isle. Gates will open at 3:30 p.m., with registration starting at 4 p.m., and the pulls at 6 p.m. The cost of admission is $10 for adults and $5 for ages 13 and under. This is a major fundraiser for the group but comes with many expenses. The Rotary Club appreciates the donations received from area businesses and individuals, and especially wants to thank Larry Bull for his hours of help in this endeavor. The club has decided to donate this year’s proceeds from the night’s 50/50 draw to a Washburn District High School fundraiser. Please help make this a successful evening for all!
August Festival
The August Festival Committee has met several times this year, once again under the leadership of Cindy Richardson Boot. The dates for this year’s August Festival are the 16th through the 19th. This year the Firemen’s Muster will be held in Washburn on Saturday and promises to be an entertaining addition to the parade and the day. The next committee meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on July 11 at the Civic Center. All are welcome — more volunteers would make for an even better August Fest!
Please check out the organization’s Facebook page: Washburn Maine August Festival, August 16-19, 2012. And remember, the group is a small number of people who are determined not to let the festival end; they appreciate your positive comments and suggestions and hope to have more workers to help keep the festival alive for another year.
Volunteers needed
We especially need an organized family or group of people to run the parade this year. It takes about five people on the morning of the parade, plus some groundwork leading up to that day. The Umphrey family has done this for years and would like to hand it to someone new. Mike Umphrey is planning to work with the new organizers this year to show them the ropes. If you would be interested in taking on this popular part of the celebration, call Cindy Boot at 455-8464.

August Fest raffle
RAFFLE — Shown is a full-sized “End-of-the-Day” quilt donated to the August Festival Committee by the “Quiltin’ and a’ Givin” group. Raffle tickets for this quilt, and also tickets for 100 gallons of fuel oil donated by Perham Oil, are available at Katahdin Trust Company in Washburn or from members of the August Festival Committee.
The August Festival Committee is selling tickets for two raffle items this year. Perham Oil has donated 100 gallons of fuel oil as one raffle item. Also, the Tuesday quilting group has donated a full-sized “End-of-the-Day” patterned quilt to raffle. Tickets for both are available from committee members and at Katahdin Trust Company in Washburn, where the quilt is on display. Thanks to Connie and Cheryl at Katahdin for selling these tickets again this year, and special thanks to Perham Oil and the Stitchin’-and-A-Givin’ quilters!
