Students’ efforts appreciated

Special to The Star-Herald
I was invited to visit the 7th graders at Presque Isle Middle School last week. This group of kids did such an awesome job with their “Operation Adoption” adoption fair for the Central Aroostook Humane Society. They all worked very hard gathering information, asking questions and getting games and pictures ready. In my mind this event was a true success.
On Friday, they presented me with a lovely donation for the shelter. I will admit that I was overwhelmed by this whole event; I cried. I am so proud of each and every one of them. This event touched us at CAHS very deeply; it was kids caring enough to gather information and run with a project to help the animals. Kudos to the kids and their teachers. You are all amazing and your efforts were greatly appreciated.
Presque Isle Middle School students were not the only students to help CAHS. In March, Julie Conrad’s 7th graders in Mars Hill also put on a fair featuring information about the Humane Society, our mission and what they could do to help.
I spoke to this group as well; again, they worked hard gathering information and putting presentations together to present to their parents and friends. We are so very pleased and impressed that children are interested in educating themselves and others about the Humane Society and what we do.
There are many misconceptions as we all know. These kids will be the ones to lead the way; they will be the ones who will help to raise the bar with regards to animal welfare in the future.
The Central Aroostook Humane Society is very pleased at the interest that both groups of students had in finding the true story about the shelter and animal overpopulation.
Cat adoption special offer
Time for a huge reality check: The shelter is full of cats. I don’t mean full, but overflowing really. These are little lives, animals who have no choice. I was almost brought to my knees the other day while visiting; what are we to do with them? Why are people still letting their cats have kittens? It makes no sense because there are not enough good, responsible homes for all of these cats.
The reality is when our population gets this large, cats come down with upper respiratory tract infections and when that happens, sick cats must be euthanized. That is the reality of our situation. Our backs are against the wall right now. For the month of June we are offering “name your price” on cat adoptions ($10 minimum) — that is for all cats! Really a great deal if you adopt an already altered cat! You must, as mandated by the state of Maine, still leave a $100 deposit when adopting an unaltered animal and that is refunded upon providing us proof that your pet has been altered. This is a great deal so take advantage of it now, we need your help.
The Central Aroostook Humane Society is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday. Check us out on Facebook or look at our lovely animals on Petfinder. If you would like to send the shelter a donation, please send it to: 26 Cross St. Presque Isle, ME 04769.
Please have your pets spayed or neutered.
