Life imitating art?

To the editor:

Some of us are old enough to remember the “Dukes of Hazzard,” one of the funny but partly true shows that we watched with our children on TV on Friday nights. Our state seems somewhat like the show. The Duke boys were always trying to do the right thing with their old car the General Lee. Old Grampa always seemed to have the best ideas. Well enough of the Dukes.

My main concern is our governor’s promise to veto bond issues even before they are voted on. Is this to discourage voters from voting on these issues regardless of what the people want. To vote in favor of a bond issue is a “yes” vote and I have felt through the years that the majority wins, not so with a veto that may come from the governor. Although I am hesitant about voting “yes” on bond issues because I do not agree with putting our state in debt, I feel that if the majority does vote for it then that is what the people want and democracy is going with the majority or at least that is what I have always believed.

This also makes me think of another character in the “Dukes of Hazzard” who always had a plan ahead of time that was sure to win but was often outdone by the Duke brothers. Boss Hogg in the end almost never won, but that didn’t keep him from wanting to be in control.
