Shelter offers reduced-rate cat adoptions

I hope you are enjoying the wonderful weather. I see lots of people out with their dogs on walks and in vehicles. Remember, it is illegal for your dog to ride unrestrained in the back of a pick-up truck. It is also unwise to leave your dog in a parked car, even with the windows open a bit. Don’t risk your beloved pet’s life, think smart. If you see an animal in distress in a parked car or riding unrestrained in the back of a truck, please call your local police department and report it, you could be saving a life.

As I look around our shelter, I am amazed at how many older cats we have available for adoption — cats that were once beloved companions and know how to be loving pets. They long for a place to call home, a warm bed, healthy food and an owner who loves them. We have decided to promote these cats by offering them at half off the usual price for their adoption (no senior discount) from today until May 31. Normally their adoption would be $60, but with this promotion any cat that is over 5 years and older would be only $30. These cats are already altered and some are even declawed, what an awesome deal!

Now is the time, if you have been thinking about adopting a cat, to visit the Central Aroostook Humane Society. We still require all adopters to fill out an application to adopt. We work very hard to screen potential adopters and find wonderful forever homes for the animals.

Having animals is all about enjoying each other’s company, about spending time and treating them like part of your family, otherwise, what is the point? We are lucky that so many people who have adopted from CAHS return to visit us or send us letters to update us on how their pet is doing. These letters, e-mails and visits are what keep us going and give us the strength to continue our mission. Unfortunately, we see some pretty terrible things and meet some “not so nice” people or deal with “not so nice” situations, so hearing a happy ending warms our hearts and reminds us why we do this.

The Paws for the Cause walk is coming up on May 19. This is one of our biggest fundraisers and we have been holding it for over 13 years! Join in the fun — the walk starts at the Humane Society at 26 Cross St. in Presque Isle. This walk is about two miles, registration is at 10 a.m. and the walk begins at 10:30 a.m. Collect pledges or pay a $5 registration fee! Lots of fun will be had by all.

On May 12, Presque Isle Middle School students held an adoption fair for the Humane Society to: 1. help animals find a home and 2. raise awareness for animal welfare. This event was held at the Aroostook Centre Mall.  At least two animals found homes as a result of the students efforts. Turnout was great. What these young people did to benefit homeless pets is very much appreciated.

Our shelter has been selected as a finalist organization in the Toyota 100 Cars for Good program. We need your help. On June 20 we will be asking you to vote for CAHS and help us win a new Toyota for our shelter. A new vehicle will help us to visit schools and nursing homes as well as transport our animals for medical attention. Keep your eyes open for more information.

If you are looking for a friend for life, please stop by the Central Aroostook Humane Society and visit with us. We are sure that we have just the right friend for you. Our business hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or give us a call at 764-3441. You can also visit us online at www.centralaroostookhumanesociety.org.
