FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENTS have started their annual penny drive to collect money for Caring Area Neighbors for Cancer Education and Recovery (C.A.N.C.E.R.).  LO-MAPLETON-DC1X-SH-20 Community members are encouraged to drop their change off at the school in the front office. The school’s goal is to match the $1,000 that was collected last year. Donations are being collected until Thursday, May 30, when the grand total will be presented to the organization at the volunteer appreciation assembly. Making their donations are, from left: second-graders Cole Chase and Logan Akeley.

The C.A.N.C.E.R. organization provides assistance to many local patients and families in Aroostook County while they or a loved one are undergoing treatments for various types of cancer. On the third Tuesday of each month, this organization makes sure that cancer patients in treatment are provided home deliveries of baked goods donated by local volunteers. Patients also receive a tote bag filled with items (crossword puzzle books, journal, magazines, travel toiletries, hats, etc.) to help them through the lengthy treatment sessions. Assistance is also given to the families for travel expenses, prescriptions and medical costs.

Earlier this school year, students at Mapleton Elementary gathered over 1,000 items for the tote bags and each grade level has been making cards to be placed in the monthly bread bags being delivered. Loaves of bread are baked by Velma Sperry in the school’s cafeteria each month and are paid for by some of the staff. The staff also collectively sponsors a hole at the C.A.N.C.E.R. golf tournament each spring. This sponsorship also includes a sign that honors the staff and family of staff that have had cancer.

During this year’s penny drive, the school’s goal is to collect $1,000 to match the amount that was raised last year. Donations are being collected until Thursday, May 30 when the amount raised will be presented to the organization at the volunteer appreciation assembly. Community members can drop off their donations in the front office of the school.
