Special Olympics
The 36th annual Special Olympics Spring Games is this Friday, at the Johnson Athletic Complex at Presque Isle Middle School.
The opening ceremony will begin at 9 a.m.
More than 250 athletes from Houlton to Fort Kent are expected to participate in this year’s event, which will include competitions in the standing long jump, 100-meter run, softball throw and relay races.
Every year, scores of coaches, parents, aides, school officials and athletes gather at the athletic complex for a day of competition, achievement and valiant efforts.
Hernandez wins Silver Medals
James “Chico” Hernandez of Washburn won two Silver Medals at the North American Grappling Association Arizona State Grappling and Brazilian Ju-Jitsu Championships held at Phoenix College in Phoenix, Ariz on May 5-6.
In the No-Gi Championship finals Hernandez lost to Ken Smith of Idaho 2-0 and he defeated Al Guinee of Arizona by a score of 2-1. He won another Silver Medal in the Gi competition as he was defeated by Mike Myers of Arizona.
The North American Grappling Association (NAGA) is America’s largest mixed grappling tournament circuit with over 150,000 competitors worldwide.
Berry competes in triathlon
Shawn Berry of Caribou has set a personal best in the Polar Bear Triathlon at Bowdoin College.
Berry finished 10th out of 300 competitors and won his 30-35 year-old division.
The event, held on May 5, was a sprint triathlon consisting of a 525-yard swim, 11-mile bike ride and a three-mile run.
C-A-N-C-E-R Golf Tournament
Golfers are invited to participate in the annual C-A-N-C-E-R Golf Tournament to be held on Saturday, June 2 at the Presque Isle Country Club.
Registration for the scramble format tournament is at 8 a.m. and shot gun start at 9 a.m. The fee for the four-person team is $200, which includes the 18-holes of golf and prizes.
All proceeds from the tournament stay in Aroostook County.

The rain date for the event is Sunday, June 3.
Ashland Logging Games
The Ashland Logging Museum will host the Spring Logging Games Saturday, May 19 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The event will feature local loggers competing in a skidder obstacle course and a log loader skills game.
Demonstrations of traditional lumberjack round-up events will take place throughout the day. Logging equipment vendors will also be displaying equipment during the games.
Admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children under the age of 12. The Spring Logging Games will be held at the Ashland Trotting Park on U.S. Route 11, south of the middle of town. Activities for kids and concessions will also be available.
