Mapleton Girl Scout Troop 1133
MAPLETON GIRL SCOUT TROOP 1133 recently toured Cook Florist in Presque Isle. The Juniors in the troop were able to complete two requirements toward earning their “Flowers” badge. Third-generation shop owner Karen Duncan gave the girls a tour of the shop including the store area where customers are waited on, the work stations where the flower arranging takes place, as well as the cooler where the flowers are kept until needed. Duncan taught the girls how to properly make their own corsages and gave them each a carnation to dye in food coloring at home. Attending the tour were, from left, front row: Alexis Getchell, Amanda Winslow, Delaney Alward and Madelyn Buzza. Back row: Sydney Robichaud, Duncan, Rebecca Rider, Katelyn Amero and Bethany Baker. Registered volunteers attending were Leaders Jennifer Buzza and Nancy Winslow and parents Laura Baker, Angela Rider, Jennifer Robichaud and Wendy Maple. Absent from the photo are troop members Alexus LaFerriere and Jenna Mountain.

Mapleton Lions Club supper and auction
On Saturday, May 5, the 50th annual Mapleton Lions Club auction will be held at 6 p.m. at the Mapleton Lions Hall. There are hundreds of donated items and services that will be auctioned that evening, including a $250 gift certificate from Estey Water Wells and $175 gift certificate for gravel from Kinney’s Construction.
This annual event is the major fundraiser for the charities supported by the Lions Club. Some of the Club’s charities include Project Graduation, Aroostook Teen Leadership Camp, Mapleton Boy and Cub Scouts and the Mapleton Recreation Department. Each year the club hangs the Christmas lights along Main Street and the club bears the expense of the electricity used keeping the lights on. Proceeds from the auction will support the lighting project.
Everyone is invited to attend the auction which will follow a public ham and bean supper at the Mapleton Lions Hall. Dinner starts at 4:30 p.m. and the auction at 6 p.m. Tickets for the supper are $7 each and can be purchased at the door. Auctioneers for the evening will be Lions Club members Matt Gregg and Ron Leonard.
Mapleton Daze update
Under the direction of the Mapleton Lions Club, plans for the annual Mapleton Daze weekend are well under way! Many of the traditional events that we have all come to know and love will be taking place again this year, including the Friday night chicken barbeque and fireworks display! However, the Club is looking for a volunteer or volunteers to organize the annual parade. If you are interested in organizing the parade, please contact Dennis Hoffses or any other Lions Club member immediately. Otherwise, the only parade in Mapleton this year will be the Memorial Day parade next month.
Please plan to attend a fund-raiser spaghetti supper Saturday, May 26 at the Lion’s Hall. The Lion’s Club is planning a supper to help raise funds for the Mapleton Daze fireworks display. The Club would appreciate the public’s support. Watch for more details in this column as the date approaches.
