WASHBURN, Maine — Being a part of the National Honor Society for the past two years has been a life- changing experience. I’ve grown into the leadership pillar, as the chapter’s president. I’ve also learned what it feels like to be truly selfless. It’s very rewarding to give back to a community that is very supportive.
The Washburn District High School chapter of the National Honor Society has been very active in the community during the 2011-12 school year. We have provided Christmas gifts for six families in our town, donated books to the David J. Lyons Washburn District Elementary School in an action to prevent bullying, raised funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and plan to volunteer at the spring Special Olympics.
By far, my favorite fund-raising effort has been buying gifts for needy families in the community. It is so much fun to go and shop for younger kids. Even though we can only imagine their smiling faces on Christmas morning, it brought joy to my heart to spread that kind of Christmas cheer.
I’m so glad to have been able to enjoy this experience throughout my high school career and will look back upon it with fond memories.
