On Thursday, March 8, the annual banquet was held at Jeff’s Catering Banquet and Convention Center in Brewer. Mr. Matthew Peterson, the Maine State Representative for District 92, was the keynote speaker.

The convention activities moved to Hauck Auditorium at the University of Maine on Friday, March 9. We were honored to have Dr. Donald Zillman, president of the University of Maine at Presque Isle, as the keynote speaker for the morning session.

This year the Maine National Honor Society Executive Committee voted to have two state service projects. The first was collecting books for the World Wide Book Drive, an organization striving to provide all types of different books to children in need. This service project was held at the local level, but posters from the participating chapters were exhibited in Hauck Auditorium on Friday.

The second service project was the donation of “I Care” bags. The chapters were asked to bring school supplies to the convention and the bags were assembled during one of Friday’s workshops. The “I Care” bags were given to the chapters attending the convention to take to their local elementary schools and other agencies to help children who are unable to purchase these supplies.

The other workshops included motivational speaker Tony Solis and making blankets for Project Linus.

After the workshops and lunch, the NHS members returned to Hauck Auditorium for a demonstration and presentation given by U.S. Customs and Homeland Security Officers.

The convention concluded with the induction of new officers for the 2012-13 school year. Carla Halvorson of Easton will serve as president of the of the statewide organization. Sara McQuade of Caribou was selected at vice president and Kayla Girardin of Presque Isle is the new northern region representative.
