Death Awaits Me
By Danielle MacBurnie
Peaceful at first.
Smelling coffee, tasting donuts.
Can’t wait to live here.
But why the separation?
Into the place we will live now
The gate is shutting.
Good-bye my precious boys, good-bye for now.
Walking into my new home.
Guards take the bag, it is rightfully mine.
Hearing a girl.
Guards pulling the trigger.
BANG.
No sound.
Looking around,
Tasting death,
It’s all around,
But doesn’t make a sound.
A friend ahead.
Chilly as ice
Fighting to breathe.
Eyes closing.
Fought all she could.
Now she’s gone.
Gone in front of me.
Hump, Hump, Hump, Hump,
In the chest.
Wondering.
Death awaits me.

Winter is Coming
By Isabelle Weiland
The birds and the bees
The flowers and the trees
The lakes and the rivers
Winter blows its horn and gives a shiver.
We know cold is here
Load up all your winter gear.
Snow falling swiftly to the ground
The saddest thing in town.
But yet we know
Just because there is snow.
Santa comes at Christmas
And comes with presents.
So kids don’t fret
Even though it’s not over yet.
For summer’s comes soon
Then we can get lost in the moon.

It Changed My Life Forever
By Nicole Theriault
Diabetes is very hard.
Also, being different
bothers me.
Eating is hard too!
It’s not always easy,
But somehow
I make it work.

Snowflake Series
By Grace Player
A drop from the sky,
Froze suddenly, instantly,
Drifting slowly down.
Cut, shaped, and sculpted,
As it flew down to the ground,
Squashed up in the street.
Suddenly scooped up,
Into a ball to be thrown,
Sailing through the air.
Hit the hard brick wall,
Exploding out in splatters,
Missing the target.
A bell loudly rang,
As the mashed snowflake fell down,
No longer one piece.

Knowledge beats fear every time
By Troy Nadeau
A lot of Americans have harsh feelings toward Muslims because of the terrorist groups that give their religion a bad name. Unfortunately it’s not uncommon in some parts of the U.S. to see someone being cruel or mean to a Muslim because of 9/11 and the terrorist attacks. Others are afraid of them because they simply don’t know about them. This fear leads to anger and hate in what they don’t understand. Another reason is religion against religion. Some Christians think that Muslims are wrong and some Muslims think Christians are wrong. This sometimes elevates to hostility between the two religions or others.
Some Muslims are biased against Americans for many reasons. These include cultural and religious differences. Many Muslims believe that the American way of life is wrong or against their religion. Muslims believe in sharing their profit with the less fortunate while most Americans are consumed with greed. Some may have harsh feelings because we invaded their homelands during the fight against terrorism. Other Muslims hate the U.S. because the country they live in tells them to. Many countries in the Middle East are not the friendliest toward America.
I strongly believe in tolerance through education. People are afraid of what they don’t know or don’t understand. Knowledge beats fear every time. A better education of the public about how the majority of Muslims are not terrorists is needed. Also I think there would be much to benefit by creating more jobs like Mr. Casey’s (a social scientist working for the Army who spoke to the students via Skype). Hatred breeds hatred, so it’s going to take some strong intervention to break the trend.
This is why many people in the USA are prejudiced against Muslims and why Muslims are biased against Americans. In conclusion we could build tolerance toward the world religions and customs.
