The Mapleton United Methodist Church will be hosting a second March luncheon Friday, March 30 at 11:30 a.m. All are invited to attend. There will not be a luncheon April 6 in observance of Good Friday.Mapleton Daze update
The Mapleton Lions Club hosted the second meeting for those individuals interested in continuing Mapleton Daze this past week. The work is moving forward. Efforts are under way to put together a Mapleton Daze parade and to find business or corporate sponsorship of the fireworks show for the Friday Family and Friends evening.
Presently, there are few funds left from the former Mapleton Daze Committee to pay for the fireworks. Any business or organization that would like to help support the fireworks show can contact the Mapleton Lions Club to let them know of your sponsorship interest.
The next meeting of the Mapleton Daze Committee will be Thursday, April 5 at the Mapleton Lions Club Hall. Anyone interested in volunteering to help with Mapleton Daze is welcome to attend.
Scouts host guest speaker
Mapleton Girl Scout Troop 1133 invited Dixie Shaw of Catholic Charities to speak at their troop meeting March 17. As dedicated employee and spokesperson for the organization, Dixie was invited to share with the girls about Catholic Charities and all the ways they help those in need. She explained how the organization supplies food to 25 food banks from St. Francis to Wytopitlock each month.
Dixie also explained to the girls how she can “turn clothing into food!” Catholic Charities accepts donations of clothing that she, in turn, loads onto a trailer truck to have shipped overseas to buyers, who pay for the clothing by the pound. With those funds, she then purchases food from the Good Shepherd Food Bank in Auburn to supply the food pantries in Aroostook County.
Another way Catholic Charities raises money to help “feed the County” is through the sales of items donated in their thrift stores. She told the girls that every time an item is purchased at the store, 100 percent of the profit is used to purchase food for the food pantries.
The girls discussed ways that they could help those in need including donating their outgrown clothing or toys or by spending some of their troop funds by purchasing canned goods or cereal. The girls recently purchased several boxes of cereal to assist Easton Girl Scout Troop 691 during their cereal drive for Catholic Charities at the Scout Show.
With the help of Dixie and the information she shared, the Brownies were able to earn their Philanthropist badge and the Juniors are well on their way to earn their Savvy Shopper badge.
Thank you, Dixie, for coming to spend the morning with us!
