Churchill wins state Hot Shot title

by Tomi Henderson

On March 11, the State Hot Shot Competition for all regional winners was held in Portland at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Washburn’s very own Emmy Churchill and Noah Caron were there, as they had previously qualified to compete in this competition for the 13- to 15-year-old level. The County was well-represented as Emmy won the overall title with a first-place finish! Congratulations, Emmy!

The competition was followed in the afternoon by a Red Claws vs. Iowa Energy game where all of the participants and winners were recognized. Just an FYI, Patrick Ewing Jr. plays for Iowa! Emmy was able to get her picture taken with Dominic Calegari who is an undrafted NBA free agent who could someday be the next Jeremy Lin! Who knows!

August Festival plans

The Washburn August Festival Committee is very pleased to announce that the Washburn Fire Department is hosting the 2012 annual Aroostook County Fire Chiefs’ Association Fireman’s Muster in conjunction with our annual Washburn August Festival celebration. The August Festival Committee will once again like to provide such events as outdoor concerts and entertainment at the park, children’s activities and games, fireworks and so much more. Organizers would like to make the 32nd annual Washburn August Festival the biggest it has been in years. The Festival dates of Aug. 17-19 are going to again be filled with many exciting and enjoyable festivities.

The Committee is asking for the public’s help. They are in need of volunteers to help withvarious events. One main and very important event is the parade. They are desperately looking for individuals or an organization that would like to organize this year’s parade.

Contact information is as follows: call Cindy Boot at 455-8464 or e-mail her at cindyboot@live.com if you are interested in participating in the wonderful parade; call Paul Carter at 455-4714 if you are interested in participating in the arts and crafts during the Festival; or call Dennis Harris at 455-8279 or e-mail him at drharris@juno.com if you are interested in being a food vendor at the Festival.

Come and share your ideas and suggestions to make this a memorable event at our next August Festival meeting, to be held on April 11, at 7 p.m. at the Washburn Civic Center. The Committee is always in need of volunteers and sponsors to make this an enjoyable time for all. If you would like to make a much-appreciated cash donation, you can mail it to P.O.
