HAINES, Glenna Johnston, 84, CORTLAND, NY & FORT FAIRFIELD, March 7, 2012. Arrangements by Wright-Beard Funeral Homes, Cortland, NY.

    CORTLAND, NY & FORT FAIRFIELD – Glenna Johnston Haines, age 84, died on March 7, at the Cortland Regional Medical Center. She was born November 10, 1927, the daughter of the late Romey and Bernice (Hersey) Johnston, and grew up in Fort Fairfield.

    In 1947, she married the late Graydon Haines Jr. and they began a life of farming together. They moved to New York in 1954 and began farming locally in 1958, when purchasing the Cottrell farm on Route 41 in Scott. They were potato growers for many years and operated a pick-your-own strawberry business until 1987.

    Glenna was active in the community as a volunteer and served for many years as an election worker. She had a strong passion for standard-bred horses. Glenna loved working on the farm and enjoyed planting flowers and vegetables even after moving into Cortland in 1987. She was a hard-working farmwife who also helped manage the business. Her life was dedicated to caring for both farm and family.

    She was predeceased by her husband, Graydon, in 1985.

    She is survived by her five daughters: Terry (Don) Butler, Cortland, Corinne (Tom) Crandell, Binghamton, Stephanie Greenfield, Cortland, Gilda (Mike) Votra, Marathon, and Millie Blaakman, Phoenix, Arizona. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Randy Foster and Daron Foster, Jim, Colleen, Becky and Patrick Crandell, Carla Greenfield Hickey, Deborah and Daniel Mason, & Gregory and Jacquee Parmiter; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph H. Johnston, of Windham, ME; a sister, Marion Stuart, Mass.; a sister-in-law, Janice Hoyt Haines, of McLean, NY; a sister-in-law, Mary Haines, of Dover, Florida; a brother-in-law Gary Haines of Maine; as well as many nieces and nephews.

    Calling hours were at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln Avenue, Cortland, on Saturday, March 10, from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Glenna’s memory may be made to the Scott Union Cemetery, c/o Elizabeth Parker, Countryside Acres, Homer, NY 13077.
