PIHS senior wins ‘Spirit Award’
BANGOR — A Presque Isle High School senior has been honored for her commitment to high school basketball at this weekend’s all-star games in Bangor.
The Maine McDonald’s Owner/Operator Association presented its fourth annual Maine McDonald’s Spirit of the Game Award to Stacia Caron. She received her award at the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches Awards Banquet on Friday at Husson University in Bangor.
Caron has served as the manager of the PIHS girls’ varsity basketball team for four years and the girls’ varsity soccer team for three years.
Her nomination letter stated, “As team manager, Caron has overcome physical challenges and has kept the teams’ scorebooks at away games – all with perfect penmanship. Opposing players can’t help but smile back at this small, joyous girl giving them high-fives in the post-game lineup.”
In 2010, Caron was presented with the PIHS Athlete of the Week award for being an exceptional girls’ soccer team manager, an award that traditionally had been given only to players.
Founded in 2009, the Spirit of the Game Award honors high school seniors who embody the spirit of the sport, exemplify sportsmanship, support and inspire their teammates and coaching staff and who show an ability to overcome obstacles and boundaries.
Caron also received a $500 Spirit Scholarship to assist with her higher education needs.
