Harmful effects of wind turbine noise are real

To the editor:

I attended the Feb. 8 legislative hearing in Augusta. This hearing was held by the committee to discuss wind turbine noise bill LD 1793. The bill requested to reduce noise decibel levels from 45 to 42 decibels statewide. The bill was noted by all committee members to approve the reduction to 42 decibels.

I testified at the hearing to reduce noise level. I shared with the committee the negative impact wind turbine noise has harmed my health here in Mars Hill. There were many people who testified in favor of the noise reduction. There were some experts who testified not to reduce noise levels. Their position was that there is no scientific evidence proving that wind turbine noise affects someone’s mental and physical health. My question to the committee at the hearing is, “Why is First Wind paying my neighbors money to keep quiet in Mars Hill?” Also, in one situation buying a neighbor’s dream home to resolve noise problems.

I also was not surprised to hear another disabled veteran like myself tell his story of the wind turbine noise effects on him. Please let’s slow down and do more research and studies before constructing more wind farms in Maine.
