Stream-Smart road crossing workshop
slated for March 23
CARIBOU — As part of a statewide effort to educate the public on how to improve stream habitat by creating better crossings, a Stream-Smart Road Crossing Workshop will be offered on Friday, March 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Caribou Armory. The Caribou workshop is the final workshop of four to be offered this spring in Maine through the Gulf of Maine Coastal Program.
According to organizers, those typically registering for these workshops are town road commissioners, public works directors, loggers, engineers, conservation commission members, watershed groups and those representing land trusts. The workshop covers road-stream crossing projects from site assessment to permitting and installation with emphasis on maintaining and restoring the habitat and economic values of the stream. They are designed to educate about maintaining fish and wildlife habitat while protecting roads and public safety, as well as preparing for the large and frequent storm events that have been washing out roads around the state and the Northeast.
Presenters include professionals from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, the Maine Forest Service, ProjectShare, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Maine Coastal Program, NOAA and the Army Corp of Engineers. Participants receive recertification credit for the Maine Department of Environmental Protection’s Voluntary Contractor Certification Program.
There is a $30 fee for the workshop, which includes morning refreshments. Registration/check-in begins at 8 a.m. To register online, visit lynx.maineaudubon.org/stream-smart. For more information, contact Becca Wilson at bwilson@maineaudubon.org or 207-781-2330, ext. 222.
