Hotham semifinalist for Miss Basketball

BANGOR — A standout Fort Fairfield basketball player, Amanda Hotham, is in the running for the Miss Basketball title for the state of Maine.

Local Maine McDonald’s Owner/Operators and the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches (MABC) last Wednesday announced semi-finalists for the 2012 Mr. and Miss Maine Basketball Awards, presented to one outstanding male high school senior and one outstanding female high school senior basketball player in the state. The award, the state’s highest basketball honor, recognizes the players’ performances on the court, as well as their contribution to their teams and to Maine basketball.

Hotham’s coach, Larry Gardner, said the recognition is well earned.

“She is very deserving considering the work she has put in and the success she has helped our program to achieve,” he said. “She would be the first to say however, that she couldn’t have done it without her teammates help and probably her coaches pushing her along the way. It certainly is a great way for her to conclude her high school playing days.”

Gardner said this is the first time a Fort Fairfield player has been up for the honor and he could only recall two other local players to be nominated. Julie Bradstreet from CAHS was the first Miss Maine Basketball in 1988 and Kim Condon from PI also received the top award in 1997.

The 10 Miss Maine Basketball Semi-Finalists for 2012 are: Hotham; Alexa Coulombe, Catherine McAuley; Amelia Diplock, Cony; Ella Ramonas, Deering; Carylanne Wolfington, Hall-Dale; Adrianna Newton, Leavitt; Alaina Vose, Medomak Valley; Amanda Johnson, Skowhegan; Selena Lorrey, Traip Academy; and Megan Gribbin, Windham.

The award winners will be announced at the Maine McDonald’s High School Senior All-Star Banquet on the evening of Friday, March 9, at Husson University’s Newman Gymnasium.

The All-Star players, All-Star coaches, members of the All-State Academic teams, Regional Foul Shooting Champions, Maine McDonald’s Spirit of the Game Award recipients and the MABC Contributor and Media Award honorees also will be recognized at the awards banquet.

The 2012 Maine McDonald’s High School Senior All-Star Basketball Games will be held on Saturday, March 10, at Husson.
