Students jump into healthy fundraiser
MARS HILL NEWS
by Tomi Henderson
On Feb. 15, students at Fort Street Elementary School in Mars Hill participated in a Jump Rope for Health and Wellness event.
This is a fundraiser in which students raise money to purchase health- and fitness-related equipment for the school. This helps promote healthy living and teaches the students the importance of being active and staying fit. This year the funds raised will go toward the purchase of roller racers that will be used in all of the physical education classes.

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Tuesday morning, Feb. 21, at the Aroostook Health Center. The special speaker was Rotarian Steve Hitchcock, who spoke of his interview with Brian and Diane Ketchum, operators of a Christmas tree farm for many years.
Hitchcock showed pictures of the many steps taken to grow the trees, from seeds to harvest. Some of the steps that are taken at various stages include fertilizing, planting seeds close together, then harvesting them to replant them 6 feet apart, butt pruning when the trees are three to four feet tall, trimming after six to 10 years, then cutting and wrapping for shipment. It can take eight to 12 years to get a tree large enough to harvest.
There are typically around 1,800 trees planted per acre.
