MARS HILL NEWS
by Tomi Henderson
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday morning, Jan. 17, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. The special speaker was Rotarian Roger Shaw.
Roger updated the club on his participation as part of the 19-member Task Force that looked at expanding early post-secondary access for high school students in Maine. They explored survey results from Maine’s high schools and colleges, reviewed the various approaches by which early post opportunities are made available to high school students, reviewed what other states are doing, and developed short-term and long-term solutions to expand access to early post-secondary opportunities for Maine’s high school students.
Some high school students don’t want or need a four-year degree, but by taking some college courses as part of their high school year, they are more apt to go on for more schooling – whether they decide to go for a four-year degree or to attend a two-year course of studies to learn auto mechanics, plumbing and heating, electrical, computers, etc.
The Task Force hopes to continue meeting periodically in order to develop and implement an action agenda for each of the issue areas.
Cub Scout meeting
Cub Scout Pack 173 of Mars Hill met for the first time on Thursday, Jan. 19, at the Mars Hill and Blaine Community Center. Scouts from grade 1-5 met with District Cub Commission leader Kathy Peary and Cub Master Mark Davis. The boys made a craft and learned the seven things they need to learn to advance to the next step in Cub Scouts: salute, sign, handshake, motto, promise, what Webelos means and the law of the pack.
For more information on scouting in Mars Hill, contact Mark Davis at 532-8302 or at pola2062@aol.com.
