Fort Fairfield Rotary hosts annual Thanksgiving dinner

FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — An organization devoted to making life better for others has done it again, feeding dozens of elderly residents during the annual Thanksgiving dinner, with the help of other service groups in the community.

“The Fort Fairfield Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus and VFW, together with many other local service organizations once again came together to provide a community Thanksgiving Day dinner. This has been a holiday tradition on Fort Fairfield for the past 25 years,” said Carl Young, public relations officer for the Fort Rotary Club.

This year’s feast was served complete with all the fixings.

“Once again we provided a turkey dinner with all the fixings to Fort Fairfield senior citizens who otherwise might not have a holiday dinner to enjoy,” he said.

Several volunteers from various area organizations made the event a big success again this year.

“We had turkeys provided by the Friends Helping Friends organization, Students Baking a Living did the roasting, while Harvest Market, Hillside IGA and others provided veggies and condiments. The Fort Fairfield High School girls’ basketball team served as hostesses and servers, seasonal music was provided by Dan Foster and Friends, and local Rotarians and KC members worked together to provide the behind-the-scenes preparation activities — giving all a true sense of the Thanksgiving spirit to enjoy,” said Young.

In all, more than 75 citizens attended the dinner and enjoyed the fellowship and entertainment at the VFW Hall. For those unable to attend, delivery service was provided free of charge.

“We also had 96 who could not come out who had dinner delivered to their homes by nine volunteer drivers,” said Young, noting that even the leftovers didn’t go to waste. “Leftover prepared dinners were donated and delivered to Homeless Services of Aroostook in Presque Isle.”
