Maine Warden Service Pilot Daryl R. Gordon, who died in a plane crash on Clear Lake on March 24, was among several persons honored during the annual Fallen Officers Tribute Run. The event was particularly heartfelt by Gordon’s family, since his sons Jim and Daryl Gordon Jr. were selected to lead the event.

Gordon, a resident of Eagle Lake, served out of the Ashland MFS office at the time of his death.

FALLEN WARDENS HONORED — Led by the sons of Maine Warden Service Pilot Daryl Gordon, who lost his life in the line of duty earlier this year, members of the Maine Warden Service participate in the fourth annual Fallen Officers Tribute Run from Vassalboro to Augusta recently. Pictured in front leading the run are, from left: Daryl Gordon Jr. and holding the flag is Jim Gordon.

The 15-mile run started at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro and finished at the Fallen Officers Memorial outside the Statehouse in Augusta.

“A total of 40 game wardens, friends and family members completed the run, which covers one mile for each Maine game warden who lost his life in the line of duty. Chaplain Kate Braestrup of the MWS, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Commissioner Chandler Woodcock and Deputy Commissioner Andrea Erskine also attended a brief ceremony at the memorial which followed the run,” said Travis Barrett, public relations representative for the DIFW.

Col. Joel Wilkinson concluded the event with brief remarks commemorating the dedication of game wardens and their families, noted Barrett.

Gordon was the fifteenth game warden to die in the line of duty. The first on record was Lyman O. Hill in 1886. Prior to Gordon, the last game warden to die was William F. Hanrahan in 1992.
