Zombie movie honored

A zombie film made about two years ago, featuring locales in Caribou and Westfield, garnered top honors in October at the Portland Maine Film Festival.

“The Zombies are Coming to Town,” directed by Nathan Oliver, was named Best Made in Maine Film during the second annual event, with winners chosen from over 500 film submissions coming from local and international filmmakers. This year’s festival featured a record number of Maine-made films, with over a dozen films shot, produced and directed in Maine. Winners received the Golden Lobster Award during the awards ceremony.

The event ran from Oct. 6-9 at the Nickelodeon Cinemas, MECA and Mayo Street Arts Center.

Oliver, whose family once lived in Aroostook County and whose father attended Presque Isle High School, has returned to the area on several occasions since filming his movie, including a premiere showing at the Braden Theatre earlier this year to share with moviegoers the first feature-length film made in northern Maine. The production included several local residents who shared in the fun of making a “zombie invasion flick,” ladened with humor.

“After a successful premier at the Braden Theatre in April, the movie was screened as part of the Portland Maine Film Festival, walking away with the best Made in Maine prize. Sweet!” exclaimed Oliver in a Facebook post.
