ROCKPORT — The No. 3-seeded Presque Isle Wildcats put a scare into the No. 1-ranked and undefeated Camden Hills boys soccer team, but a first-half goal by the home team held up for a 1-0 win.

Presque Isle finishes the season 14-2-1 after knocking off No. 2 Ellsworth in the Class B semifinal match up.

Both coaches say the game, played Wednesday at the Don Palmer Field in Rockport, was extremely competitive.

“I thought the teams were even in the championship,” said first-year Wildcat coach Joe Greaves. “It was really the tale of two halves, with us playing flat in the first half and Camden controlled possession. The second half was ours and we controlled possession.”SP-PI boys-dcx1-sh-45

HEADY PLAY — Presque Isle’s Wilder York, left, and Camden Hills’ Peter Vannorsdall go up to head the ball during Wednesday’s Eastern Class B soccer championship in Camden. The Wildcats fell 1-0.

Greaves added Presque Isle definitely had chances in the second half, but it just wasn’t their day.

“I told the boys when two teams are even it usually comes down to whoever gets the lucky bounce,” said Greaves.

“Today was a great game and a lot of fun,” Camden Hills coach Ryan Hurley told downstate media. “Presque Isle made us work hard for the win but we earned it.”

Camden Hills got its lone goal from Andrew Flanagan in the first half with an assist from Sam Predham.

Presque Isle’s Andrew Kofstad made nine saves on 16 Windjammer shots. Each team had one corner kick. Presque Isle had nine shots on goal.

Wrapping up the season coach Greaves said the Wildcats will be losing a very talented senior class, but he said they have some boys ready to step up next year.
