Happy Days Senior Citizens
The Easton Happy Days Senior Citizens’ Club met on Thursday, Oct. 28, with 21 seniors present for the noontime meal. Two people came later. The draw for the day was the guest speaker, writer and author Glenna Smith.
After the delicious potluck dinner, Glenna spoke to the group about her time in the County as a teacher, playwright and director. She brought back to mind times and people that many hadn’t thought of in many years. She also signed several of her books that people brought with them. It was a good time of just reminiscing together. She told the group that there would be an article in the next Echoes that she had written about Easton High School and its teachers.
Those present at dinner were: President Nina Trask, Secretary Eldora Carter, Treasurer Ida Doak, Marie Hewitt, Lindy Fowler, Clair Carter, Elizabeth Martin, Joanne Johnson, Helen King, Arlene Ladner, Ezalee Smith, Rogena Thomas, Lianna Demerchant, Jeannie Pelfrey, Margery Niblett, Bridgett York, Paula White, and the guest speaker Glenna Smith and her niece, Dianne Perley, of New Brunswick, Canada.
Later Polly Lockhart brought her mother, Patience Clark, to hear Glenna speak. After the speaker and her driver, Dianne, left, many of the others left too, leaving 13 members for the short meeting.
The President read a thank-you card from Elizabeth Martin for the donation to the memory of her sister, Lois Ladner. She also read a letter from the Ronald McDonald House asking for a donation but the club had already voted not to donate to outside organizations.
Sixteen seniors went to Houlton to Grammy’s Restaurant. The treasurer reported that she had purchased two bags of paper plates for the kitchen and offered the treasurer’s report. This was moved by Eldora and seconded by Helen that the report be accepted as read. Ida called the roll, with these members present: Nina Trask, Eldora Carter, Ida Doak, Marie Hewitt, Arlene Ladner, Lindy Fowler, Rogena Thomas, Ezalee Smith, Joanne Johnson, Margaret Niblett, Helen King, Elizabeth Martin and Lianna Demerchant.
There will be no meetings in November or December because of the dinners put on by the School Board for the town’s seniors. It was moved by Ida and seconded by Helen that the meeting be adjourned.
Proud of soccer teams
We are so very proud of our Easton High School girls’ and boys’ soccer teams. This is the first year ever that the boys and girls both went to the playoffs. What an exciting two weeks for the town of Easton.
After winning both of our preliminary games, the girls traveled to Fort Fairfield where they put up a good fight against the Fort girls. They lost that game 3-2. It was a great game.
Then the boys traveled to Southern Aroostook the following day to play in the quarter-finals with many fans following them. They won the game down there with Carl Mullen heading the ball into the goal. Great job boys. We are so PROUD of you all.
Then for the big game against Bangor Christian — I know that the last person out of town that night shut out the lights. There were many fans, family and friends there to support our Bears. It was a great game even though we lost 4-2. Our Bears fought hard until the end and have nothing to be ashamed about. They gave it their all.
Now carry this on to basketball season and we will all be there cheering you on again. Thanks to you all, girls and boys, for the great season and all the hard work you all put in.
