WASHBURN — A family of three was left homeless following a fire early Tuesday morning that destroyed their home located at 12 Church Street.

“Washburn Fire & Rescue responded to a structure fire at approximately 12:45 a.m. Nov. 1. Upon arrival, crews found the single family home fully involved and proceeded to protect the neighboring residence,” said Troy Heald, fire chief, Washburn Fire Department.

According to Heald, all three individuals in the home escaped safely with no injuries.

“The neighboring home was evacuated but residents were able to return about two hours later to that dwelling,” he said.

The three displaced residents are being helped by the Aroostook County Chapter of the American Red Cross, noted Heald.

“There were 18 firefighters on scene, with crews returning to the station at approximately 3 a.m. A monitoring crew stayed on scene through the remainder of the night,” said Heald.

The home was owned by James Bouchey. Heald was unsure if the structure was insured. The home is considered a total loss.

The Maine Fire Marshal’s Office has been notified but the cause of the fire remains undetermined at presstime.

Washburn Fire Department received assistance from Crown Ambulance, Maine Public Service and the Mapleton Fire Department.
