Van Buren upsets Washburn girls

in Class D soccer playoffs

Sometimes it’s not the number of shots on goal, but the quality of shots that matters. That was the case as the No. 5-seeded Van Buren Crusaders upset the top-seed Washburn Beavers.

The Crusaders only mustered two shots on goal Friday against Washburn, but both found the back of the net giving Van Buren the 2-1 win.

An obstruction call gave Van Buren an indirect kick from about 20 yards out with less than five minutes to go in the game. Haley Lizotte coverted a short pass from Brittany Duprey for the win.

The Crusaders’ Felisha Bouchard scored off a pass from Parise Rossignol in the first half.

Mackenzie Worcester tied the game at 1-1 for Washburn with nine minutes left in the game. She picked up a deflected shot, split two defenders and blasted a shot into the left side of the goal.

Ashley Wilson made 14 saves on 20 shots for 11-5 Van Buren. Rayah Saucier faced two shots and didn’t have any saves for the 14-1-1 Beavers.

Van Buren plays the No. 2-seed Penobscot Valley High School this afternoon in Howland.

Here’s a recap of the other local Class D girls’ playoff games:

Washburn 8, Bangor Christian 0 — In Washburn Tuesday, Oct. 25, the Beavers opened up the playoffs with a convincing 8-0 win over Bangor Christian.

Worcester scored two goals and notched three assists to help Washburn roll past the No. 8 Patriots.

Carmen Bragg and Carsyn Koch each added a goal and an assist for the 14-0-1 winners while Mykayla Churchill, Maegan Fitzpatrick, Kristi Sperrey and Kennedy Churchill each added a goal.

Washburn coach Marcie Barbarula said despite the offensive explosion it was the defense that stepped up.

Rayah Saucier made five saves on six shots.

Penobscot Valley 1, Fort Fairfield 0 — At Howland Friday, Bethany Heald drilled a low-liner from 15 yards out to score the game’s only goal with 8:23 remaining in the game, lifting the No. 2 Howlers over the third-seeded Tigers.

Fort Fairfield (9-5-2) was thwarted on its best scoring opportunity earlier in the second half. The Tigers pounded an indirect kick from the 6-yard line into the goal area, but Penobscot Valley senior striker Meghan King got to it first and headed it clear.

The Tigers’ Katy Donovan finished with eight saves on 11 shots.
