United Methodist Women plant trees

The Easton United Methodist Women met last Wednesday at the church dining room for their regular monthly meeting with seven members and one guest present. The meeting was opened with devotions by Dottie Beaton in the absence of Margery Niblett. The word for the month was ‘patience,’ with everyone having a reading with that word.  The Purpose was sung to the tune of “Blest Be The Tie That Binds” with Dottie Beaton at the piano. Treasurer Marie Hewitt reported that $175 was taken in on Blanket Sunday, on Mother’s Day, to be sent to Church World Service. Of that amount, $60 was donated by the Mars Hill church members. This will purchase 35 blankets for those in need. It was reported that one baby quilt had been sold, leaving five for sale and two large ones. President Eldora Carter told the group that she had two more quilts nearly ready for tacking, hoping to get them done before Easton Field Days. The group plans to have a table at the Field Day celebration with items made by one of their home-bound members, Lillian Flewelling.
Four members – Marie Hewitt, Lindy Fowler, Glenice Craig and Dottie Beaton – attended the Presque Isle United Methodist Women’s annual tea. A letter of thanks was read from Church World Service for the money donated for the blankets. The group made 15 visitations this month and six cards were sent. The president reported that the trees purchased in memory of Helen Todd and Wilda Wathen had been purchased and planted in front of the church and were coming along fine. The trees planted last spring for Wilda and Margaret Wolverton had been damaged by vandals, one irretrievable. The other one was moved to the front of the parsonage and another tree was also planted there. They seem to be doing fine. It was voted to give a donation to the Gideons for 10 Bibles and to complete the 5-Star Project with Gift in memory for Helen Todd, Gift to Mission in Honor went to Rollie Dionne, the Special Mission Recognition pin is to be announced later. There was discussion on donating the items left over from last fall’s sale to the Catholic Charities and how to get items to them. They were reminded about donations to be taken to Portland to The Root Cellar by members of Easton churches who were going there to work for a few days. Refreshments were served by Lindy Fowler. Those attending were: Eldora Carter; Marjorie Corey; Marie Hewitt; Dottie Beaton; Lindy Fowler; Carol Higley; Glenice Craig; and a guest from the Patten UMW, Judith Heath, who has been visiting with her brother and wife, Clair and Eldora Carter.

Visits
Nina and John Trask have recently returned from Florida where their daughter, Norma Jean Triola, had just completed her master’s degree in aeronautical science, with distinction, from Embry Riddle Air University. Norma Jean is a former airline pilot for U.S. Air and had been attending Embry Riddle full-time to attain her degrees. She will be returning to pilot duties doing air charter and flight instruction while waiting to return to the airlines. John and Nina then flew to Portland to attend graduation for their granddaughter, Tammy Vachon. She received her master’s degree in social work from the University of New England. A grandson, Adam Trask, of Presque Isle, has just received his BS degree in exercise science from the University of Maine at Presque Isle. And Bradley Thibeau, son of Kirk and Cheryl and grandson of John and Nina, just graduated from Presque Isle High School. They were very busy attending graduations clear across the country. We congratulate them all.

Congratulations
Shawn and Christina Corey of Jamestown, N.Y., are the proud parents of their first child. Little Lucas Michael Corey was born in the Jamestown hospital on June 19, weighing in at 7 pounds 6 ounces. The happy, first-time, paternal grandparents are Michael and Donna Corey of Easton and the maternal grandparents are Dwight and Ginger Chapman of Painted Post, N.Y.

Sympathy
A belated sympathy goes out to the family of 62-year-old Darrell Page, who passed away at Dana Farber hospital in Boston on Tuesday, June 12. Darrell fought a very courageous battle with cancer. He is the son of the late Ralph and Hazel Page and the husband of Adeline Hutchens Page. Darrell graduated from Easton High School and attended the University of Maine at Presque Isle. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Viet Nam War and was a member of the American Legion Pattee-Page Post 187 of Easton. Darrell was very active in the Boy Scouts of America while he was in Easton. He was employed by the U.S. Civil Service, moving to Rhode Island, in that service, after the Loring Air Force Base closed. He had just retired and returned to Easton in 2004, and sometime later was diagnosed with a serious type of lymphoma. Besides his wife of Easton, he leaves: a son, Greg Page and family of Wade; two daughters, Tracy Hathaway and family and Mary Anne Page-Anderson and families of Easton; also a brother, William Page and family of Easton; and two sisters, Linda Burnes and family of Owing Mills, Md., and Jeanette Rediker and family of Fort Fairfield. He leaves seven very much-loved grandchildren. He enjoyed his time with friends and family at their camp on Deering Lake. A memorial service was conducted on Monday, June 18, at the Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Caribou with members of Pattee-Page Post 187 present, where the interment also took place. Those who wish to remember him may do so to the C.A.N.C.E.R., Caring Area Neighbor For Cancer Education and Recovery, P.O. Box 811, Presque Isle, ME 04769 or The Family Inn, P.O. Box 1692, 70 Sewall Ave., Brookline, MA 02446.
