holds annual Employment Law Conference

Over 70 Aroostook County business leaders participated in the day-long Employment Law and Human Resource Conference sponsored by the Northeast Society for Human Resource Management (NESHRM) at The Crow’s Nest Event Center on Thursday, September 15.

NESHRM has been sponsoring this annual event for 15 years, which brings top speakers from all over the state to discuss hot business topics to human resource professionals and managers.

“The goal of the conference is to provide high-quality, up-to-date information to our area businesses at an affordable price, ” stated Jennifer Curran, conference chairperson.

This year’s participants received training on:

• Maine Workers and Marijuana — When is Illegal Legal;

• Succession Planning — 5 Best Practices;

• Puzzling People — An Overview of the 4 Temperaments;

• Governmental Affairs — Legislative Update; and

• Maine Worker’s Compensation — On the Mend?

LaNiece Winslow, NESHRM president, said: “This is NESHRM’s premiere annual event and all of our members are involved in planning — from deciding topics, choosing speakers and selecting vendors.”

Attendees were able to speak with a variety of vendors offering services to assist businesses, including insurance brokers, health care providers, employment agencies and safety consultants.

NESHRM is a diverse group of human resource professionals and business leaders in Aroostook County. A guest speaker attends monthly meetings discussing current issues in the workplace. These meetings also serve as an avenue for members to seek advice from fellow colleagues on HR-related matters.

Keeping up with current legislation is very important to the group. NESHRM is directly involved in the state and federal legislative process and provides updates from the Governmental Affairs Committee. NESHRM acts as a voice for area businesses, supporting what is best for Aroostook County.
