MARK McKENNA, owner of Winnie’s Restaurant and Dairy Bar in Presque Isle, presented the Smart/Ricker Chapter 10 Disabled American Veterans a check Oct. 15 for the proceeds of the sale of the Patriot Burger, which debuted July Fourth.
The one-third pound burger is made with 100 percent American beef, American cheese, lettuce, tomato and a special sauce. The money raised from the sale of the burgers will help local veterans and their families with such expenses as fuel assistance, groceries and home modifications. Winnie’s and the local DAV chapter are also working on the development of a Veterans’ Corner which will be featured outside the restaurant. A 30-foot tall flagpole has been installed and will fly the American and POW flags. The site will also feature trees, pavers and a plaque dedicated to all veterans. Pictured are, from left, front row: Jim Gehring, adjutant, DAV Department of Maine; Mark McKenna and Donald Pelkey, commander of the Smart/Ricker DAV Chapter 10. The Veterans’ Corner will be dedicated Saturday, Oct. 29 at 10:30 a.m. All veterans and their families are invited to attend.
