Horsemen support No. 2
To the editor:
The horsemen and women of Maine are asking for your support to pass Question 2 on the Nov. 8 statewide ballot.
Question 2 would allow the construction of racinos in Biddeford and Washington County. The Biddeford project is a relocation of Scarborough Downs, as part of a new entertainment complex that will include a slots parlor, hotel and restaurants.
Harness racing is popular in dozens of countries around the world, generating more than $3 billion from wagers. In order to compete with other forms of entertainment, harness racetracks in the U.S. need to be paired with slots parlors.
Some harness racing families have moved from Maine to other states, and if our tracks are not allowed to compete, more will be forced to leave.
