WASHBURN – Sidney Alfred Alley, 87, died, Wednesday, October 5, 2011, at his residence. He was born March 26, 1924, in Jonesport, Maine, the only child of Alfred and Phebe (Norton Cummings) Alley.
Sidney attended the Jonesport Elementary School and graduated from Jonesport High School in June of 1941. He served three years in the Army with the 199th Quartermaster Gas Supply Company and was in the invasion of Leyte Island in the Philippines. He entered the service on January 22, 1943, and was discharged on January 24, 1946. On October 20, 1949, he married Ramona Church. Together they resided in Jonesport until 1953, and then moved to Presque Isle where they lived for 40 years. During this time, Sidney worked for Cole’s Express until 1977, when he suffered a heart attack and retired. In 1993, Sidney and Ramona returned to the old homestead in Jonesport, which had been built in 1930 for Sidney’s mother.
Growing up, Sidney and his parents lived with his grandparents until 1949, at which time he and Ramona and his parents moved in to the home built in 1930. Sidney and Ramona resided in Jonesport until 2003, when they moved to Washburn, having purchased a new home overlooking the Aroostook River and the vast countryside, a location which Sidney thoroughly enjoyed.
