PRESQUE ISLE — A project to replace the sewer and water mains in a section of the city around Pond Street got under way in September, with work to continue through the month of October.
“The project includes the installation of about 1,250 feet of sewer main on Pond Street, Industrial Street and Elizabeth Street. The sewer work begins at the intersection of Pond and Exchange streets, and it ends at the intersection of Elizabeth Street and Crestmont Circle,” said Steve Freeman, director, Presque Isle Water and Sewer District.
The contractor for the project is Trombley Construction.
“Trombley Construction was the low bidder at $459,598. The consulting engineer for the project is Woodard & Curran of Bangor,” said Freeman.
Freeman said the sewer main is being replaced because it is in “poor condition.”
“It’s susceptible to the infiltration of groundwater and is too small. The water main is also being replaced because it is too small,” explained Freeman.
The new mains will improve the reliability of sewer and water service along Pond Street, the Industrial Street business area and the Elizabeth Street residential area.
“The new water main will also improve public fire protection in the vicinity of the project,” noted Freeman.
The sewer utility part of the project will be paid by grant funds from USDA Rural Development, with the water utility portion being financed with a 20-year loan from the Maine Municipal Bond Bank, according to Freeman.
“The project should be completed by the end of October. The project will interrupt traffic on Pond Street. Residents are urged to avoid traveling on Pond Street while the contractor is working,” said Freeman.
