Professor’s text used in Korea
PRESQUE ISLE — College students in Korea soon will be using a textbook co-authored by a University of Maine at Presque Isle professor as part of their coursework when the book “Clinical Laboratory Chemistry” is published in Korean.
Dr. Linda Graves, medical laboratory technology professor at UMPI, and her co-author Robert Sunheimer of the State University of New York, had their book published last summer by Pearson. The textbook was the third publication for Graves, but this is the first time any of her books have been translated into another language.
“Needless to say, we’re thrilled with the news that our book was selected by Pearson Korea to be translated into Korean,” Graves said. “Both Bob and I are anxious to see what the Korean book will look like, although we won’t be able to read it!”
Graves, an UMPI faculty member since 1976, worked on the book for five years. “Clinical Laboratory Chemistry” is meant both for medical laboratory technology (students in two-year programs) and medical technologist/clinical lab scientist students (those in four-year programs). In an effort to ensure students are grasping key concepts, Graves and Sunheimer designed the book so that each chapter details objectives for students and presents one or two case studies, a “what’s ahead” summary and checkpoints to see if students understand the main points of what they have read.
Graves and Sunheimer also created PowerPoint presentations for each chapter, and an instructor’s manual to be used by teachers.
“It really is an honor that they [Pearson Korea] thought enough of ‘Clinical Laboratory Chemistry’ to spend the time and expense to translate it to Korean,” Graves said. “Korea has excellent clinical laboratory science programs and train outstanding clinical laboratory scientists, so to have our book be a part of their education is exciting.”
