Girl Scouts collecting mittens

WASHBURN NEWS

by Tomi Henderson

Area Girl Scouts are asking for help in keeping the little hands of area children warm this coming winter.

The Scouts are asking for new or gently-used mittens and gloves which will be given to elementary school students. They can be either store-bought or handmade, and all sizes will be needed.

Donation boxes will be available at the Washburn Town Office, the Washburn Memorial Library and at the mail box area at Salmon Brook Meadow.

Thank you for your help in this project. For further information contact Christie Cochran at 455-8034.

Quilters work to make a difference

Make a Difference Day is Oct. 22 this year. The quilting group called Stitchin’ and a Givin’ from the Washburn area is hosting a full day of quilting at the Washburn Trailrunners Clubhouse at Station Road in Washburn to mark the occasion.

This is the group’s second annual quilting day to celebrate Make a Difference Day, which is nationally celebrated. The event will be open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and participants will be quilting memory quilts for Hospice of Aroostook. The quilts will be given to children 0-18 years old who have a parent or primary care giver in the care of Hospice of Aroostook. The goal is to make 35 quilts that day.

Anyone who is willing to help is invited to take part. Materials are available for those people who don’t have any but would like to help. If a person doesn’t sew, but would like to help, please come. There are many tasks that need to be done such as cutting, tacking, pinning, in addition to sewing.

This year, a potluck lunch will also take place. People can come for all day or any segment of the day. If they are unable to come that day and would like to donate quilt squares, a quilt top or a finished quilt, it would be greatly appreciated.
