Probus Club holds September meeting

President Karen Sweeney called the September Probus Club meeting to order at 10 a.m. and invited Program Chairman Mel Fitzherbert to introduce the speaker of the day.

Ken Hensler, representing The County Federal Credit Union, informed the group that this was formerly The Loring Federal Credit Union until Loring Air Force Base closed. Ken explained that a credit union is a cooperative organization that is owned and controlled by its members who use its offerings to further their benefits. For a small initial fee, one becomes a member and acquires the right to vote.

Credit unions are non-profit organizations where money is returned for higher dividends to members. You must be a member to vote and participate.

What is a Federal Credit Union? Its motto is: Not for profit – Not for charity – But for service.

The County Federal Credit Union has four locations in Aroostook. More than half the population of Maine is credit union members.

Hensler said the Credit Union Act was established in Washington, D.C. during President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s term and all are screened. Small credit unions are decreasing in numbers, while larger ones are increasing rapidly.

After thanking Mr. Hensler for a very interesting and informative presentation, a short recess was called.

Following the break, Karen read an invitation to attend an International Probus Club celebration in Moncton, N.B., Canada, on Oct. 27.

Pearl Carmichael read two poems: “Going Out to Eat” and a selection from “You’re No Spring Chicken.”

With no further business to consider, the meeting adjourned at 11:30 a.m.
